This week, a matter of days before the national lockdown is due to end, it was announced that Durham will be moving to tier 3. However, that by no means stops Art Soc. activities and other creative events from taking place, and in this edition we've got lots of arty updates and some fun recommendations to keep you going through the next phase of the covid-19 saga!

Keep a particular eye out for our next interview, with head of the Tyne and Wear art collection, Iain Watson, and don't forget to submit your work to the Christmas exhibition by 3rd December!

Go to our "What's going on" section to find out about some exhibitions in the North-East that you can enjoy online.

What's been on?

Thursday Sessions
Thursday Sessions have been powering on through on Zoom. Oil pastel and fruit & veg are coming up, and the Thursday Sessions gals are ending the term with a fun Christmas Chaos evening! Look out for those events on our Facebook and Instagram and also on the @duthursdaysessions Instagram.

Thursday Sessions have also undertaken the mammoth task of creating and delivering Isolation Art Bundles. A massive thank you to Esmé, Lily and Ana for doing such a stellar job!
If the Isolation Art Bundles sound exciting but you missed out this time round, keep an eye out for announcements later in the year about running these again - if we get enough interest we may run this again.

Life Drawing
This month also saw our first trial of Life Drawing over Zoom! This has proved quite difficult to organise because of limitations on nudity, but Izzy, Yujin and Matty have been working to coordinate some sessions. The session this month was focused on 'Hands', and hopefully we'll be able to put on more Zoom or in-person sessions soon.

Art History Focus
In November, Art History Focus has explored the works of many artists and movements. including George Shaw, a modern British landscape painter, Hannah Höch, a German Dadaist and pioneer of collage, and The Bauhaus School of Art. These have been a pleasure to write about, particularly Faith Ringgold (an American painter and textiles artist), who exhibited her work at the Serpentine Galleries a few years ago.

Art History Focus in December will discuss Griselda Pollock, a feminist Art Historian who works at Leeds University, Neo-Impressionism/Pointillism (think dots!), and Isaac Julien, a film-maker.

Student Art
Have you made something you're proud of this term? Did your flatmates 'wow' at the results of your Thursday Sessions? Do you have any pieces of art stashed away in a notebook, always hoping for an opportunity to show them but never found the chance?

If you answered yes to any of those questions, or if you just want to see your work on our Instagram page, send in your art!
If you do want your work featured, drop us a message on our Instagram, and we can either feature your work in a story or on a post. Alternatively, if you tag @duartsoc in your caption, we can share your post to our story.

Exhibitions to see in the North-East

See below for some online exhibitions in the North-East that you can enjoy safely from home!

Heritage at Heart, Sunderland Culture
25th August 2020-31st March 2021

Image from Sunderland Culture website

This exhibition is firmly rooted in the North-East, examining the links between Sunderland's industrial past and artworks from the Arts Council Collection.
"Presenting objects, archival documents and photographs from the Museum’s collection, alongside artworks from the Arts Council Collection, the exhibition unearths Sunderland’s mining, shipbuilding, glass, pottery, automobile, rope and construction industries."

Dry Run 2020, Shipley Art Gallery
Summer 2020 (but still available online)
A virtual exhibition of work from Sunderland University second year students on the glass and ceramics course. The work displayed is beautiful and very varied, with the students demonstrating an exploration of a wide range of concepts and treatment of the material. Definitely worth a look.

#Portraits4PPE Digital exhibition, Lady Kitt and Disability Arts Online

A collaboration between artist Lady Kitt and the Disability Arts organisation, the exhibition, put together in the first months of the Covid-19 pandemic, aims to raise awareness of the lack of PPE for social care workers, community-based nursing staff, home carers and PAs. It features 8 portraits, all created during the pandemic, celebrating 8 extraordinary people.
